Take a Tour of the Winery and See How We Do It!

Our winery will be open for tours and tastings in 2009. Please check back to learn more. We will post it on this site when the winery is open.

Larry Smith

Larry is the chief winemaker at Legoe Bay Winery. He and Karl Malling established the winery in 2005, producing wines from quality white and red vinifera grapes, sourced from premier vineyards in Eastern Washington. He began making wines in 1977 for a start-up winery in Pennsylvania and has continued to make wine and teach winemaking over the years. In 2003 Larry enrolled in the Certificate Program for Professional Winemakers at the University of California at Davis, receiving his Professional Winemaker Certificate in 2006. He also has a background in chemistry and metallurgical engineering.

Karl Malling

Karl Malling has been involved with winemaking since he was a teenager. Starting as a hobby in his friend’s garage with handpicked grapes and a used oak whiskey barrel from Jack Daniels, Karl now spends virtually every weekend at his winery on Lummi Island in what was formerly a marina on Legoe Bay. His law practice keeps Karl in Seattle or traveling when he isn’t at the winery. He likens winemaking to the law: “Both are crafts involving discipline and art. Being disciplined is necessary; but art is what makes the difference and makes it fun.”
